Prepare your business for Australia Day 2019

Public holiday

Australia Day is almost upon us and it’s time to prepare for one of the busiest days of the year.

The public holiday falls on a Saturday this year, so people might spend it at venues on the holiday Monday. Because of the expected large crowds, you and your staff should get ready for an increased risk of alcohol related incidents.

Prepare your venue for Australia Day 2019

You can prepare your venue first by understanding your maximum patron capacity, restrictions and trading hours. Your staff should be able to refuse service to intoxicated customers and serve alcohol responsibly.

Since Australia Day is a school holiday, you should understand the laws relating to minors and ask for acceptable forms of ID. Practice responsible promotion and advertising and display required signage and your 2019 license. Make sure that alcohol is consumed only within your red line area.

To keep your patrons and staff safe, you can replace glass with plastic and provide free drinking water. You can limit service to one drink per person with no shots or doubles and ticket your event to adhere to your venue’s patron capacity. You can also hire additional crowd controllers and assign a staff member to be an RSA officer during that day. Lastly, you may offer safe transport options to your patrons.

Remember that VCGLR inspectors will visit several venues in suburbs and regional locations, focusing on minors on premises, observance to the RSA, intoxicated patrons and adherence to patron capacity and license conditions. Licensees who are found to be in breach of liquor laws or their license conditions may incur penalties such as a fine or a suspended or cancelled license.
