As a health professional, nurse or midwife, it may be common for you to buy work-related items and pay for these yourself. These expenses are usually valid tax deductions and claimable on your next tax return. Here are some tax tips and tax deductions nurses should use to boost their refund.

Tax deductions for midwives and nurses

It varies from person to person but these items are often classified as tax deductions for nurses. Keep your receipts and documentation for any expenses you claim.

If you pay a membership fee or union fee to a nursing body or union, you can claim the costs. Your work uniform also incurs expenses and you can claim the purchase and cleaning costs of these items. You can also claim stationery items and the depreciation costs of your work computer. Other claimable expenses include mobile phone bills, subscriptions to industry-related publications and home office expenses.

Accounting for healthcare professionals

Usually, nurses and midwives can claim car expenses when they’re required to transport patients or travel between hospitals during their shift. These qualify as tax deductions for nurses. Make sure you keep a logbook to make sure your claim is correct. Note that travel between home and work cannot be claimed.

If you have been reimbursed, you cannot claim for the cost as a tax deduction. Remember that the ATO is very good at detecting mistakes and you could be penalised for it later. Self-education expenses are also claimable if you’re studying to further your role, but if you’re still looking for a job, they cannot be claimed.
