Know which award is best for your restaurant or café

To know which award is for your restaurant or café, consider the award classification which is most appropriate to the work performed by your employee and to the environment in which your employee normally performs the work.

Know your business style and the tasks that will be performed by your employee. You may also use Fair Work Wage Decision tools to choose the correct award but remember that this is just a guide to point you in the right direction and not meant to be a sole information source.

Keep records on file such as code of conduct, KPIs, award documentations, etc. Take note of special clothing, travel reimbursements and allowances that some of your wait and kitchen staff may be entitled to. Remember that a full-time employee is required to work 38 hours per week but an employee may be rostered to work up to a maximum of 11 ordinary hours on any day. You should also study penalty and overtime rates on weekend and evening shifts. If you have an offset agreement with a full-time employee, don’t forget that the period of time off that an employee is entitled to take is equivalent to the overtime payment that would have been made.
