How to manage your roster effectively

Staff wages are often the biggest cost for any hospitality business, so tight management is required.  You may forget some factors that are involved in roster generation.  Rosters are often created last minute because of last minute updates and changes and individual circumstances are inherently like that.  What is important is that you make sure the shifts are always filled.

2. Public Holidays

Some of the most overlooked details are public holidays and other celebrations that may affect trade, balancing a right mix of staff, arranging for pre-approved leaves and compliance with industry awards.

3. Wage costs and Productivity

Use a rostering system to regularly check the important details.  Find out if your wage costs are increasing and if there are emerging trends that you need to keep up with.  It is important to watch your costs and maintain them at a percentage of your budget but without a system in place, it can be pretty time consuming.  Analyse your wage costs, percentages and labour productivity in relation to your expected sales before announcing the rosters.
