“Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.” – Colin Powell
Hi, I’m Jamie. I am the founder of Sky Accountants.
I often think about Steve Job’s speech, the one about joining up the dots. It’s difficult to join up the dots moving forward, but easy to see the steps looking back. I guess the most important thing for any business person to have in order to take that next step into the unknown is purpose. If you don’t know why you’re doing something then your not going to make the distance. One of my favourite writers is Joseph Campbell. He continually states the need to live a life of “rapture” and follow your “bliss”.
It’s so important to follow your dreams, more importantly have the courage to. Plenty of people will say “you can’t do that”. I think that’s when you’re in your bliss. Sir Richard Branson would’ve heard that many times. The business people I see that are most happy are ‘not’ the ones who have arrived, but the ones most enthusiastic about the journey. They are following their Bliss as Campbell would describe. They are doing what they love irrespective of everything else. That is the key.
The word enthusiasm comes from the ancient Greek word eufousiasmz, meaning “inspired by or possessed by God”. When you feel this way about your work or about your vision for your business, arriving doesn’t matter. It’s living in the now and knowing you love the work you do. It’s the journey that really counts.
